Ever ready for adventures Dachshund is a daring and fearless breed. The breed is keen interested in hunting of small games while tracking the scent. They are excessive barkers and diggers in addition to their independent and stubborn nature, however they enjoy playful activities with their family whenever chance is given. They are wonderful with children in their family. On the other hand Dachshunds are wary of strangers, some may snap at strange children while others like to bark vigorously. Long haired Dachshunds may be quieter and less terrier like.

Low level of body and ground covering approach provide flexibility in movements through confined spaces like tunnel or dens, the powerful jaws are able to hold its quarry even underground. The gait of this wonderful breed is smooth and fluent having pleasant and brisk expression. Smooth and sleek coated variants, wiry and coarse coated variants and fine coated variant are all three divisions in this breed. All three coat varieties have particular qualities.

The Dachshund breed was originated in Germany around 1600s, initially the dog was tasked to hunt small games like badger and rabbits, their much suited low at ground body, helped in chasing, hunting and bringing the prey back from confined spaces, narrow passages and possibly tunnels. Smaller variant of Dachshund was bred to hunt hares, foxes and otters. The breed was transported to USA through travelers from Germany. With the increase in gene pool, the dog was registered with AKC in 1885. The breed faced extinction during World War I & II. Extensive breed protection programs helped the breed to survive. Presently the dog is used as an active hunter, vigilant watchdog and family pet.

Temperament

The personality of Dachshund dog vary from dog to dog, the breed carries some terrier background which is troublesome for trainer. They are stubborn, independent, curious and aggressive to strange personnel as well as dogs, however go along well with family pets but after socialization. The breed is not suited for first time dog owners due to their aggressive and obstinate attitudes. Indoors, the dog is cheerful playmate of family, it enthusiastically takes part in all activities, very gentle to children and harmless to other family pets, however strangers are not allowed to enter in the friendship billet easily.

The breed is quite independent, it tends to decide itself. They are proved hard to housetrain, the job of handler is demanding, it needs a great deal of patience, commitment and devotion. Its stubborn instinct would make it ignorant of orders.
