The breed origins in Ireland and is assumed to be the oldest breed of the region still alive. Native of the valley used the dog as farmhouse guard, herder, flock protector, watchdog, hunting small game and vermin repellent. In 1947, the Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers were imported to United States for the first time. AKC recognized the breed in 1973. The breed is well known as a working dog, herder, guardian and rat killer.

The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is tremendous friend and alert companion of the family. It enjoys the flexibility in strength, stamina and speed. Daring breed, without fear and reluctance; can mess with wilds and other larger animals courageously. Indoors, the Wheatens are extremely devoted family members. They stay calm, polite and caring towards children and quite harmless to other pets. If ignored, they would adopt city life and will wander around the town looking for affectionate people to shake hand. However they will remain attached with family.

Inquiring and suspicious to strangers trait proves a good watchdog. Firm protective to their families inside, while outdoors, ever ready for tasks, especially, this breed likes picnic trips. These dogs welcome their master warmly as he was away for many years. They get sad and suffer separation anxiety when left alone for longer periods; they also miss the family member gone away for long time. They usually search for a lap of affectionate companion to lay a while and rest with.
