Affenpinscher is small breed having unique personality with a solid and hard physique and great appearance. Having terrier instinct it may not only inquisitive, stubborn and bold but being playful and mischievous may loves to monkey around too. They tend to bark unlike most of terrier group dogs. These toy dogs are moderately good with other pets/dogs at home and children, they are recommended for those families which are like to have some fun, entertainment with a plenty of humorous sense. The primary traits of this purebred dog are hunting, agility and athlete. The purpose of the production of this unique terrier breed was to be ratters in shops, stables and as well in homes.
They are brawny, compact square-proportioned with medium bones and almost monkey like face with amazing array of expressions. Being smaller version of working terrier they are not fragile. Affenpinschers are strong, agile and active enough to catch and dispatch mice and rats. The rough coat of this unique terrier group dog is about 01 inch in length and somewhat longer on its neck, chest, legs and head. Their coat provides them protection against harsh conditions and vermin. Being a small breed they are not delicate or weak but strong hunter and agile dogs they are.
Their history of origin dates back to 1600s in Germany and was recognized by AKC in 1936. The World-War-II has slowed down the pace of popularity of this amazing breed. Since, they are extreme rare even in German and America. Later, they Bred down in size and moved through to become ladies companions. Now a day, Affenpinschers are known as mischievous, happy, alert and great companion purebred dogs.
Temperament
Affenpinscher is truly a dog for humanity that loves to be involved in the matters of family very actively. They are not independent like other many terrier group dogs. They are excellent in problem solving and figuring out the things. They love to explore the things mischievously for amusement of family and keep them in touch with their fun loving deeds. A real playful at heart is an affenpinscher.
Affenpinshers are exceedingly intelligent, need positive and firm training to ensure they do not be dominant or much assertive. Unless of their small size they are good protector of family and can bark loudly when feel any threat around. They are good watchdog may alert the owner about upcoming threat or approaching strangers to the gate. Beyond their small size they may tend to be in fight with even large size dog entering in territory.
Like all other many terriers they can have tendency to protect their property, food, bones or toys even bedding they occupied. Although they are good family dogs but they get along well with older children who understand the instinct of Affenpinscher. Younger children may also be taught to interact with affenpinscher well. A teasing behavior of small or older children may invoke the terrier instinct of dog and this may lead to a disastrous end. Socialize the dog with small children and other pets in its early age. They may tend to be good companion of other dogs, cats and non canine small animals raised together at home. The early age socialization make the dog capable to accept the new people, animals and environment.
Although, Affenpinschers are easy to train but do not easy for housebreak. They require diversity in routine of daily training to avoid bothersome and non observance. They are quick learner on routine and complex tricks and also love to accept challenge. Never let alone an affenpinscher for a long time it may lead the dog to unwanted behavioral issues. Long time Loneliness may tend to this dog to be rude and impatience with their owner. Careful, committed and reward-based training would prove more fruitful to bring harmony in temperament.
Owner Should Know
- Like other toy dogs, they are not easy to housebreak. Crate training is recommended for this toy dog.
- Often considered hypoallergenic due to wiry fur. Remember, this should not be mistaken with “non-shedding”, all dogs may produce dander or shed even less or more.
- Some Affenpinschers are likely to be effected by hip dysplasia and tumors.
- Affenpinschers may not do well with small animals of rodent group i.e. ferrets, hamsters and gerbils etc, it is due to their hereditary instinct of ratters. They can be good with fellow canines and even cats at home raised together.
- Affenpinschers are loyal to adult members of family and can be immense companion with older children in family but not recommended for family with too young children or toddlers at home.
- Remember, it is a rare breed so to be prepared to spend much time on waiting list if you are going to buy one.
- Seek for reputed and trustworthy breeder or supplier to get healthy puppies, ensure puppies are clinically checked and are disease free.
