Pharaoh Hound The Hound Dog Overview

Amongst the oldest adapted dog breed, the Pharaoh Hound The Hound Dog is one. It dates as old as 4000 BC. Ancient Egypt is agreed origin of this breed, however, the exact origin is still not known. In old Egyptian literature, some documents are held showing a dog closely resembling the Pharaoh Hounds, it is accepted that the Pharaoh hound is descended from there. Natively the dog was used as a guard dog with livestock and cattle along their way; it was also used as gundog and retriever of the birds hit by the hunters. Sketch of this dog was graved on the back side of Maltese Lira coins in 1977. Firstly the Pharaoh Hounds were introduced in Britain and USA during 1960s, thereafter the breed got recognition in 1983 by American Kennel Club.

Pharaoh Hound The Hound Dog is classified as multi-sensitive and able to hunt its quarry by one or all means of detection including sight, scent and hearing. In America, the breed is knowingly considered as sight-hound. The build is quite similar to Greyhound, with additional advantage of strength, speed and dignity. Its gait is curious, free alert and easygoing with good drive and approach. Stamina is high enough to hunt throughout the day without being tired. Its muzzle and nose are long enable good sense for scents, ears are erected horns enhancing the quality of listening sense. The dog is slightly longer in length than in height. Head arose high with long neck make it an investigator or detector. Short and glossy coat is coarsely rough with good fittings.

The extremely fast sprinter and vigorous hound, Pharaoh Hound The Hound Dog is a smart, active and reliable dog. It is well known as sight-hound, capable of detecting prey by extreme sensitivities of eye, ear and nose. Indoors, they tend to remain quiet to make better sensitivity of listening of slowest noise, a calm natured and well devoted family companion. They are well suited for clean house residents as they tend to remain tidy. The pace is so light and quiet, they would get in your room without being noticed. They are very playful and lively dogs in the house, the parents at home whose children have been grown up and are out on their jobs will accept this breed willingly as they prove sociable. The dog is very good for first time dog owners, it would not challenge them, rather, would give a strong feel of devoted bonding. They are declared extremely good chasers, if your dog has grown enough to chase small animals including small dogs and cats; the peril alarm is sounded for those animals. Chasing nature could tempt them any time, therefore, keep them in close-fenced area or keep in leash for the safety of other animals, not only of yours but your neighbor’s also.

The Pharaoh Hound breed is highly sensitive and dominating for larger size of animals at home. They are much suited for single people family or empty-nesters because of their aggressive and fighting nature for larger dogs and chasing danger of smaller animals. They are ideal for the family willing to have single pet. To make them suitable for household environments, socialize them in early age to get maximum benefits.

1. The behavior of the Pharaoh is very gentle and polite if housetrained in early age.
2. Pharaoh Hounds are a little temperature sensitive and would be affected by cold. Keep them indoors preferably with warm clothes in winter.
3. Strong prey drive and chasing nature could tempt your dog to escape from yard, therefore, keep in leash or in the close fenced area when you are not available at home.
4. Generally the hounds are not barkers, however, the Pharaoh Hounds will bark at intruders, odd smells and sounds in their surroundings and during chase of its quarries. They may also adopt barking when left alone for quite long time.
5. Although the breed is quite well with strangers, however, they are curious to investigate as well. They have great concern regarding the safety of owner’s family and may be used as watchdogs but not graded as perfect.
6. The breed is classified as average shedder, moderate grooming is good for its hygienic health, this dog itself remains clean.
7. Pharaoh Hounds are subject to coprophagia, also known as stool eating. Scoop the poop right away to avoid this dirty habit.
8. The Pharaoh Hounds are outfield hunters and need exercise to satisfy its physical fitness. At least 30 minutes exercise daily but regularly is suggested to keep its temperament under control.
9. Seek for reputed breeders or trustworthy suppliers to get healthy puppies, never buy puppies from irresponsible supplier. Ensure puppies are clinically checked and are disease free.
