Saluki The Hound Dog Overview

The dog has very old history as house held dog, the Egyptian tombs has the evidence of the presence of this dog breed several hundred years before Christ. The name of the breed is said to be derived from ancient Seleucia civilization. The roamers of Arab used this dog to hunt small game in the deserts; usually these animals include gazelles, hares and foxes. The dog was said to be the noble despite the Muslim concept of the dog as dirty group of animals. The Saluki dog was considered a meat provider therefore, it was given the status of room sharing dog. As the nomadic of Arab were wide spread across the Middle East, the breed was also equally distributed on wide area. The larger area differs with terrain and climate has introduced some variety in this breed as well. Currently Saluki breed is full of variants. The Saluki got the attention of western world during twentieth century. The Saluki was recognized by American Kennel Club in 1928. Persian Greyhound, Tazi or gazelle hound are locally accepted names for this breed. The breed is widely used to hunt small game and a family companion.

Saluki The Hound Dog is well muscled and strong packed with stamina and weather endurance. They are equally able to hit its quarries on plain grounds as well as on mountains. Their head is held high for wide field of view, the gait is smooth, effortless with good approach and drive features. The hair on ears are long, rest of the coat is smooth and shiny like silk. Tail has long hairs till to its toes. The impression is gentle, dashing and dignified. The breed is locally popular and accepted by a larger strength as family dog.

The Saluki is made for outdoor activities and has high energy level to perform its duties in the deserts and in plains. They are tremendously fast chasers, they have an exceptional sense of smelling the scent of the quarry. They are fast and furious for the prey and will run the game down easily. Indoors the Salukis are serious and calm natured dog with devotion and soft temperament. They behave very well with all family members and remain gentle to children. The dog is wary of strangers and sometimes gets violent in response of guarding the family and its property. They provide the owner with food and flesh, therefore are considered as noble, workable and adaptable breed within the house. They tend to remain touchy with any one of the family members to which they get more affection and notes. The breed is harmless to house hold objects and does not tend to chew sofas beds and other things. The Salukis are smell-less and clean dog, easily trainable to home life.

The owners should keep in mind that, Saluki may not come to him every time whence called, they prove to be a little ignorant of owners command. The dog cannot be said an easygoing and flexible, however they are very energetic, high-spirited and striking dogs. Once they started chase the target, they will get it, even kill it. The speed is un-chase able, if you left the Saluki off leash, it may runaway behind any suspect, no one can catch it. They are keen to sleep on beds, sofas rather than on floor. They are able to leap arrest low flying and hopping birds.

When adapted for family life, keep them engaged in activities, rather they will get bored and destructive in response. The need extensive business and exercises on regular bases. They would be happy with one yard fenced around and a lot of toys and other chewable things to remain engaged. They are challenging in housetrain, one should bear tolerance and commitment while handling Salukis. They could be excessive barker and howler when exercises have not satisfied them. They are not well around other pets due to its hunting nature. You need to socialize them to suit your home and lifestyle.

2. Off leash Saluki is not trusted for other small animals; keep them leashed or high fenced.
3. The breed is aloof of strangers and stubborn sometimes.
4. Socialize your Saluki from its early time.
5. Salukis need wider area to exercise their activities and are not suited for apartment life.
6. They need pads or beds to sleep, arrange bedding for them accordingly.
7. They need active families to live with; leaving Saluki without work will result in a destructive dog.
8. Salukis are gentle with children; however toddlers should not left without governance.
9. Salukis are clean, low shedder and quiet dogs.
10. Salukis are demanding in training, need familiarization with pets, small pets are not recommended.
11. Seek for reputed and trusted breeders to get healthy puppies, ensure puppies are clinically checked and are disease free.
