The Chesapeake Bay retriever is developed for hunting games on fields and in waters under variety of conditions. The extremely energetic dog survives in freeze waters too, extraordinary diver and swimmer sharp to locate hunted prey to fetch out for its master. Its build is rather rectangular while slightly longer in length than in height with muscular limbs and webbed feet. Chesapeake Bay retriever is purely an American breed of sporting and retrieving dogs, the name is adapted after the name of state of its origin Chesapeake Bay of Maryland. Two Newfoundlands were survived from an English ship that was wrecked off the coast of Maryland in 1807. These dogs were cross bred with local retrievers which resulted in development of Chesapeake equally capable of working on field and in icy waters. Initially used to hunt water fowl from sea, the dog had historic record of retrieving several hundred birds in a day. Its popularity increased steadily beyond Chesapeake Bay region. The breed established quite well and standardized by the end of 1885 and was recognized by American Kennel Club. The breed got boosted popularity in United States despite being one of the oldest breeds registered with AKC. The dog is well appreciated by lively outdoor families to have an energetic family member.

Temperament

The Chessie is high energy, lively dog with versatility of work on ground and in waters. Running, walking and swimming are the most favourite activities for this sparkling dog. They stand firm against any severe climatic conditions but the real happiness they enjoy is among the family. The house with old children is much suited but young kids should not be trusted with Chessie without governance as the dog may unintentionally knock over.

Chesapeake Bay Terrier requires heavy exercises to satisfy its physical and mental stimulation. Accompany Chessie in walking or plan playful activities in yard or in swimming pool.

Its oily double coat is curly that needs periodic brushing to avoid matting. Clipping and removing dead hairs may be planed twice a year. Bathing is yet another issues as the oily coat resists water and on other hands the oil of coat is washed off. The coat sheds minimal and would not be cleanliness problem in the house. Be careful about ears that are prone to some infections, keep the dog hygienically clean and well groomed. Peoples with dog allergies should caution as this breed is not hypoallergenic.

Eager to learn they tend to accept training commands but rarely influenced by independent trait to ignore the orders. Retrievers are generally not suited as watchdogs because of their greeting instinct, but Chesapeake Bay retriever is believed to be the hardest most among the retriever breed to be applied as watchdog yet not declared as a perfect guard. Although Chessie get along very well with house held pets to which the dog has already been socialized, they stay aggressive to strange dogs especially when on conflict. Cats may not find any place in your house when you have selected Chesapeake Bay retriever. Early socialization is mandatory to retain harmony in house. Introduce all possible pets to dog in early age.
