Domesticated large breed of dog Bullmastiff holds characteristics of Molosser dogs. As their size depicts, they are natural guardian of home, land, property farms etc. This docile breed is calm, fearless and happy natured, they rarely bark, independent, slightly tough to obedience training, classified as low shedder, need minimal grooming efforts. Required activity level is low, thus suitable for open houses as well as apartment livings. Reserved with strangers, aggressive to unfamiliar dogs and cats but polite to family children, young toddlers still at risk of their large size. They form fantastic watchdog besides tracking, agility, conformation, therapy dog and carting applications.

The Bullmastiff is a powerful dog, developed in right balance of bones and flesh, docile but heavy structure readily serves as deterrence for strangers. Their build is square-like, some could be slight larger in length than in height. Its coat is thin, short and tight over body with some wrinkles on face, available in fawn, red or brindle colors. Leaf-like ears hang down the head. Fearless breed carries fearful projection to viewers, an equal percentage of Mastiffs and Bulldogs in expression. Moderate in flexibility, its gait is powerful and astonishing. The overall package confirms a perfect guard and watchdog able to restrict, warn and even mess with intruders for the sake of safety and security of its family.

England is the origin of Bullmastiff breed which dates back around mid of 17th century. These were developed to guard game-houses or large estates to prevent unauthorized hunt of wilds. These dogs were featured to track quietly, sharply without being noticed to pin and hold poachers. Crossing of Mastiff and Bulldog probably dates as early as 1791, however no documented proof is held with history. This cross is assumed to get large structure of Mastiffs with temperaments of Bulldogs. The product is described as perfect guard dog and got popularity as “gamekeeper’s night dog”, the adapted color was pure black or brindle which helped in camouflage at night. Repeated crosses were conducted to achieve right percentage of 60 % characteristics of Mastiff and 40% of Bulldog. The recent breed is categorized as pure breed and recognized in 1933 by English Kennel Club.

Gentle, quiet and calm Bullmastiff dogs are devoted guards and companion dogs. This docile breed is fearless but stubborn, hard to exercise control over them when they have decided anything. Quite well going with animals and dogs to which this breed is socialized, they tend aggressive to strange dogs and cats. Less playful in house, however gentle to the children, yet possess risks to young children due to their large size. Dominating owner would go calmly with; however, new owner may come across the fear and terrible situation while handling them.

Trainability is tough due to its independent nature, they tend to solve problems at their own will, meek handler would not be able to train the dog in obedience, furthermore there is no place for harsh or tough training schedules, neither the food offers, packages or rewards can help handler in motivating the dog for training session.

Heavy body and high energies need daily exercises to retain physical fitness. A simple walk on leash and short romps are enough to satisfy exercise desires. They are sensitive to temperature, hot weather is challenging for them, keep them under shed or preferably indoors to avoid heat stroke. Being an average shedder it needs minimal grooming. Occasional brushing, washing and bathing are vital. They need a wider space to stretch.

This breed is not hypoallergenic; people with dog allergies should keep this fact in mind, further select this breed only if you accept snores and drools
