The Mudhol Hound is a guard and hunting breed of dog developed in India. They possess strong protective instinct augmented by great devotion and loyalty to owners. This breed is famous with many other names spoken natively including Caravan Dog, Karwani and Lahori Pashmi. The breed loves outdoor activities with their family. Affectionate, gentle and caring, they share play sessions quite enthusiastically. They are reserved rather wary of strangers, slight aggressive to strange dogs but good with other pets if grown together. They should be supervised with young kids; usually they get along well with older children. The breed is highly intelligent, independent, self-assured, stubborn, tough in training and too rambunctious if not well exercised. They need low maintenance to stay groomed.

The Mudhol Hound is a large breed of dog with exceptional strength and stamina. The build is slightly longer in length than in height. Its head is long, narrow from front but broad between ears. Its jaws seem deceptively weak but actually powerful. Ears are medium in size, usually hanging. Its oval-shaped eyes are large. Neck is long, well muscled, strong and well-fitted into the shoulders. Its back is long, broad and well-muscled with a little bit curves over the loin. Its tail is not too long but strong at the base. The gait of Mudhol Hound is high-foot, flexing all four legs and easygoing. Its coat is short, smooth and silky with different textures. The overall expression is a piercing gaze, watchful and protective demeanor.

The Caravan Hound was developed in western region of Deccan Plateau, India. It is a wide area which includes Karnataka, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh. This dog has served native farmers as a perfect companion, a furious hunter and efficient guard for royalty as well as common peoples. The ancestors of Mduhol Hounds made their way to India though Mountainous Khaibar Pass, currently in Pakistan by early traders, mercenaries and invaders. This is a key route holding military and trade importance. The most probable ancestors of this breed include Sloughi from North Africa, Saluki from Middle East and other breeds like Azawakh, Greyhound and Afghan Hound. Several crosses with these breeds resulted in finely developed Caravan or Mudhol Hound.

Temperament

Mudhol Hounds are excellent working dogs, highly intelligent, sensitive and affectionate; they are reserved rather wary of strangers while loyal with family. With high observation skills and sensitivity, they are able to detect odd smells, sounds and other movements. This protective and cautious trait makes them perfect watchdog. They are good with children of old ages and need supervision with young kids. They get along well with all those pets which are grown together from their puppyhood age.

They bond with the most active and outdoor family member and thrive when with him. They feel sorry for any member of the family if gone away and had not seen for a long period. They suffer separation anxiety if left isolated from its people for considerable long time. This breed if kept in Crate would get too aggressive, thus not suited to be kept in crate for long periods.

Being strong, energetic and high stamina dog, this breed demands healthy amount of exercise daily. Keep them satisfied and tired for tranquility and peace indoors. Remember a tired dog is the best for young toddlers. An unsatisfied dog would be too rambunctious and destructive in the house. Keep leashed and hold its lead in your hand while walking, they are good partner at running as well. Always lead the dog with walking ahead of the dog so that the dog knows the leader.

The real life of this breed is outdoor, their strong prey drive and high sensing ability may lure them out of the house. Keep them leashed or in a fenced yard to avoid such unwanted adventures. Not suitable for apartment life, they are best kept in farmhouses, open field yards and as companion guards of farmers and families. Socialization training is demanding rather challenge especially to new owners. The owner should demonstrate true leadership because this breed is highly stubborn, independent and self-sufficient. Once the owner is recognized as alpha dog among the pack, the Mudhol Hound would be obedient and submissive to commands. As a general rule, harsh methods of training are not appreciated by this breed rather, gentle and reward based training results in positive temperaments.
