Indian native dog Pariah is an ancient domesticated breed of dog. This is a street walker and wandering breed but with aggression and dominance. One of the common breeds of Indo Pak region including Bangladesh, the Pariah is pure breed without any blood mixes. This hunting partner extends loyalty and devotion to its owner and remains protective. All situational companion, this dog would prove enthusiastic family pet if domesticated in early days of puppyhood. This breed is developed in very natural environment and has never been selectively bred for any special characteristics.

Mostly square-proportioned but some could be slight rectangular, Pariah dogs are build sturdily with bank of energy and powers. This medium breed embraces good drive and reach with elegant short-stepped gait. Its double coat is short and dense, upper coat is moderate and coarser, whereas undercoat is soft. Generally base color is brown with mild to solid tones; additionally it could be spotted with white and brindle. Its jaws are strong with scissor bite. Almond-shaped, dark brown but sharp eyes and aside-erected pointed ears are in well balance to body structure. The tail is held high with excitement but remain curled usually. The overall expression projects a watchful, slim and sharp dog.

Presently known Pariah, the Native Indian dog is agreed to be from Indian region besides some theories about its ancestor that are thought to be from ancient China. Rare in other parts of the world, this breed is very common in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. From the ancient us, they are used as faithful companion of man either on hunt or in daily village life. The breed bears similarities with Canaan dog of Israel. Fossil researches in Israel and China have some evidences indicating this dog’s presence at very early ages. Naturally developed, this breed has not been recognized by any Kennel club till to date yet has registration with Primitive and Aboriginal Dog Society (PADS) based in USA.

Temperament

Besides a street dog, Pariahs are extremely protective to their families when domesticated. They bond very strong with its owners and their belongings including cattle and other livestock. Extremely vigilant, this dog has tendency to safeguard its related personnel and their packs from any predators in forest areas. They never end the dispute due to lack of courage, yet daring to mess with opponent till logical end of fight. They possess territorial and dominating traits, further independent and curious attitude towards strangers make them hard to compromise on security concerns of family and its belongings. They are perfect watchdog, guardian and protector.

While adopting this wandering breed to house environment, one should bear its challenging and strict behavior due to its high intelligence, the dog would need high commitment and dedication besides patience during housetrain. These dogs, although stubborn yet easy to train due to their fine response in return of polite handling. Variety should exist during training routines, otherwise they would get bored and a little destructive. It is also important that owner should hold ‘Leader of the pack’ position to control authority over dog otherwise the dog would dominate the owner. The dog does not respond to repetitive activities, they are keen to perform new tasks.

Pariahs are active dogs that are able to walk for prolonged durations; they are slim athletes and need extensive exercise to satisfy their physical and mental stimulations. They are moderate eaters and would not eat beyond their requirements; therefore they do not tend to get overweight. They hold strong sensitivity to detect odd smells and sounds, they provoke owner immediately upon detection of any suspect. One may observe them as heavy barker.

  1. Curious, territorial and protective traits put them in perfect watchdog and guardian category.
  2. They need early socialization to suit in house hold environment, they are gentle to children, however young toddlers should be governed while in vicinity.
  3. Walker by nature, they need wider area to satisfy their physical exercise requirements, never trust a domesticated dog leaving free without leash.
  4. Pariahs are noisy dogs, this would be the test of the patience of your neighbor when living in close community.
  5. They are easy to train yet need consistency but variety in training, they would get bored with repetitive events rather offer them new tasks.
  6. Pariah dogs are not developed by human breeders for any required qualities but they are natural developed dogs and would possess some natural and strict traits in their personality.
  7. They are dominating dogs, other pets would get along well with them after accepting dominance.
  8. Domestication and socialization should be started in their early puppyhood, introduction to other pets during the same period would prove fruitful.
