Tremendous and enthusiastic breed, Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is best suited dog for active and lively families. The dog is excellent in house environment, a little tricky, naughty and cheerful member of the family. They enjoy family life by coalescing in house. They are very sensible, responsive and protective to family members. They are gentle to children and harmless to other animals as pet. They stay loyal and devoted to owner. Digging and jumping is its natural habit.

Right balance in length and height, the Wheaten dogs are square-proportioned and sturdy build dogs. They are the packet of energy and stamina. They suit in a variety of conditions to work as watchdog, guardian, working dog and hunter for small game, besides being agile to company in any situations. They hold good grasp and drive with active, free and effortless gait, tail is held erected to indicate suspecting or observing something closely. Soft and shiny single coat of the breed stands its distinction among the other terrier breeds. Overall expression is graceful and dignified.

The breed origins in Ireland and is assumed to be the oldest breed of the region still alive. The breed has great relevancies with Kerry Blue and Irish Terrier and was anciently known as “poor man’s dog”. Native of the valley used the dog as farmhouse guard, herder, flock protector, watchdog, hunting small game and vermin repellent. In 1947, the Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers were imported to United States for the first time. AKC recognized the breed in 1973. The breed is well known as a working dog, herder, guardian and rat killer.

Temperament

The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is tremendous friend and alert companion of the family. It enjoys the flexibility in strength, stamina and speed. Daring breed, without fear and reluctance; can mess with wilds and other larger animals courageously. Indoors, the Wheatens are extremely devoted family members. They stay calm, polite and caring towards children and quite harmless to other pets. If ignored, they would adopt city life and will wander around the town looking for affectionate people to shake hand. However they will remain attached with family.

Inquiring and suspicious to strangers trait proves a good watchdog. Firm protective to their families inside, while outdoors, ever ready for tasks, especially, this breed likes picnic trips. These dogs welcome their master warmly as he was away for many years. They get sad and suffer separation anxiety when left alone for longer periods; they also miss the family member gone away for long time. They usually search for a lap of affectionate companion to lay a while and rest with.

The Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers have exactly the same temperament as of their name “Soft”, they are the best choice for peoples who need a moderate but faithful family companion.

There is always a code of conduct to handle the family pets as well, the young toddlers may pull the dog from its tail, beard and may snatch dog’s belongings, all this could result in annoyed dog. The Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers are best suited for families having older children who behave the dog rightly.
