The Pembroke Welsh corgi is a smaller and straight-legged variety of dog having pointed ears and a short tail. They are very clever and mindful in mental abilities as well as physical strength and power. They need daily exercise to stimulate its mentality satisfaction. They are devoted family companion, cheerful and active playmate and alert guardian of the family. They are gentle to children however can nip at heels during play. They are aloof and non-communicative to strangers. Most of this breed are heavy barker.
The dog is moderately build, a little low height and light-boned, short and straight legged variety. They are less sturdy and muscular as compared to the Cardigan Welsh corgi. Its gait is easy, smooth and free with good drive and approach. The breed is quick, reactive and variable to make compact herding dog. They had been used as herding flocks of animals in order to stop kicking hooves by certain cattle. Weather resistant coat consists of an undercoat of medium length and a long length slightly rough and coarse outer coat. The overall expression is sharp, healthy and intelligent similar to fox however, the dog is not dodger.
Pembroke shire of Wales is the land to which this breed of dog belongs. The breed is one out of two corgi breeds which were collectively named as “Welsh Corgi”. These two are Cardigan Welsh Corgi and Pembroke Welsh Corgi. The later one is younger and distinguished separate breed of the dog. The fabulous distinction of the Pembroke Welsh Corgi is its service with Queen Elizabeth II, 30 dogs of this breed were held during her reign. In flock herding group, the Pembroke dogs are the smallest and smartest dogs. For more than seventy years, this breed remained with royalty in British. Pembroke breed was recognized in 1934, whereas the Cardigan registered in 1935. Both Corgis were used as vermin hunter, farmhouse guard, herding and cattle driver. They can force cattle to move ahead by kicking on their heels. Its small size was much suited for quickly securing itself and escaping from the possible kicks of cattle being driven. This breed is the quickest amongst other herding breeds and intelligent enough as it does not need guidance on every step but can herd the cattle all day long.
Temperament
The joyous dog, Pembroke Welsh Corgi is a compact package for farmers to suit their daily applications. Indoors, the dog is very active, trustworthy and loyal to family. They are caring to children at home and love to play with them. They are quite happy and enthusiastic playmate, vigorous in activities, they can harm someone, but it is only unintentional. Usually they love to run and chase playfully. They have somewhat dominating nature, especially to other dogs, male Pembroke Welsh Corgi dogs may be more aggressive to same sex dog, but socialization can control such rowdy attitudes. They are excellent watchdogs and will prompt the owner when any intruder gets in, or any other loss of property is suspected.
The breed is somewhat director and wants every moving thing to be grouped and moved in a discipline.
